🔗 Share this article The network's Premier New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Extension for an Additional Two Seasons. Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by dark humor, this show's sincerity found an audience and turned it into a surprise hit. A Significant Investment In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters. "My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future." A President's Endorsement The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its peculiarly charming sensibility. "All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'" A Different Kind of Comedy When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about observing this endearing family navigate their daily lives. In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its long-running layer of irony. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts. “It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.” The Path Forward With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to bask in the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan. The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
