Igor Jesus scored twice as Nottingham Forest rounded off the group stage of the European competition with a convincing triumph against Ferencvaros at the home stadium.

Forest had previously guaranteed a place in the knockout round play-offs and went into this fixture with a slim possibility of reaching the league's elite, even though they required other matches to go their way.

That did not happen but this assured display will give Forest fans belief that their team can come through the two-legged play-off to advance to the last 16.

A Ferencvaros midfielder did hit the upright with a headed effort inside the first 10 minutes for the visitors – coached by ex-Premier League forward Robbie Keane – but it was all Forest from then on.

They opened the scoring in the 17th minute when a delivery from midfield was turned into his own net by the defender and added a second shortly after – Jesus firing an effort in at the far post for his tenth strike of the campaign.

Jesus' eleventh goal arrived soon after the restart when he timed a run perfectly to escape the defence and then place a shot past the shot-stopper.

The third strike killed off the visitors' aspirations of mounting a recovery and instead Forest scored again when the impressive James McAtee scored from a penalty after a infringement by the unfortunate Bence Otvos inside the box on the winger.

The Europa League qualifying round lottery is scheduled on Friday, 30 January (midday UK time), where Forest might face either Fenerbahce or the Greek club.

"It is not just the result, there was that feel about it. I want these guys to do collectively well, the entire team," said Forest boss Sean Dyche.

"This is another step, but it is a good step."

Team Breakdown: Jesus Catches Eye as New Signing Observes from Stands

Igor Jesus has been a standout performer for Forest in European competition this season with half of his 11 goals coming in the tournament.

His brace also means he has scored a trio of strikes in his previous two outings and the threat of competition for his place in the forward line could be spurring him on.

Italian forward Lorenzo Lucca was recently signed on loan and he was observing this match from the directors' box.

That may well have been on the striker's thoughts as he was impressive against Ferencvaros, delivering two excellent goals and generally being a menace to the visitors' defence with his speed and movement.

Jesus was not alone in impressing, with McAtee producing his finest display in a Forest jersey since signing from Manchester City in the previous transfer window, while the Swiss international also impressed.

Such positive showings will give Forest some renewed optimism as they switch focus to increasing the gap from the Premier League relegation zone when they welcome their London rivals on Sunday.

"The minimum requirement is a response," continued Dyche.

"I have always trusted their work ethic or their loyalty or honesty. It is just about displaying your quality.

"James was excellent and Dan Ndoye was super sharp. Igor got another two and these are good signs."
