Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty

Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed outrage after former President Donald Trump accused a contingent of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and declared they should be detained and penalized "with execution" following their release of a disputed video.

The Content That Provoked the Controversy

The clip, published on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic congress members who in the past worked in military or defense positions.

"Like us, you all swore an oath to protect and uphold this founding document," the representatives declared in the brief video. "Currently, the threats to our constitution aren't just from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our statutes are explicit, you can refuse illegal orders, you can decline unlawful commands, you have to decline improper directives. No one has to execute directives that break the statutes or our founding principles."

Trump's Incensed Reply

The recorded statement seemed to trigger a furious response from the former president.

On the following morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional message, he stated: "This is really bad, and Harmful to our United States. Their words cannot be enabled to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Representatives React

Following Trump's comments on that day, House Democratic leader published a combined declaration condemning the statements.

"Political violence has no position in this nation," they wrote. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all served our United States with tremendous loyalty and excellence. We strongly censure Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful death threats against congressional representatives, and appeal to GOP representatives to forcefully do the same."

The party representatives also said that they had been in contact with protective services "to guarantee the security of these representatives and their families."

"Donald Trump must right away delete these radical online messages and retract his aggressive rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the announcement added.

Representatives' Firm Reaction

The representatives who were featured in the video also released a response.

"We are former service members and defense specialists who care for this nation and made an oath to safeguard and defend the founding document of the United States," they said. "This commitment is permanent, and we plan to keep it. No warning, pressure, or call for violence will prevent us from that fundamental obligation."

"The significant point is that the ex-president views it punishable by death for us to reiterate the law," they added. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their support as they execute their oath to the constitution and responsibility to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They stated: "Every American must join forces and condemn the former president's requests for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a period for ethical certainty."

Further Partisan Reactions

The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's remarks and published on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the capital punishment of government members."

He added: "This is an outright THREAT. All senators, all representatives, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should condemn this without delay and unconditionally."

The Republican House speaker justified Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", describing the video as "extremely improper", adding: "This represents very harmful, you have important representatives of Congress telling soldiers to disobey orders, I think that is historic in the nation's past."

The Conservative representative also allegedly told the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "defining the crime of sedition" but that "attorneys have to analyze the wording and determine all that."

Executive Branch Statement

During a White House press conference on that day, when inquired by a media member, "Is the president want to put to death elected officials?", the administration spokesperson answered: "Certainly not."

"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the spokesperson stated. "We see sitting members of the American legislature who conspired to orchestrate a video message to members of the national defense, to current military personnel encouraging them to ignore the commander in chief's legal commands."

She added: "The purity of our defense system depends on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is violated, it can result in casualties, it can lead to confusion, and precisely what these elected officials ... are basically supporting."
