Delhi Wakes Up to Hazardous Haze Following Diwali

Tuesday brought residents of the world's most polluted city encountered exposed to extremely polluted air that was classified as the "critical" category.

Alarming Pollution Readings

Various sections of the city registered an AQI above 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the recommended threshold recommended by the global health authority.

In some locations, readings of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of 1,800, amounting to 15-20x exceeding safe standards.

Pyrotechnics Ban and Current Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, the government had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their major role to the deadly haze that covers the metropolis as winter approaches.

Yet recently, the newly elected regional administration petitioned the highest court to propose a easing of the ban.

They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously questioned by environmental experts as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a balance between "heritage and public health".

Legal Ruling and Implementation

To the disappointment of medical and ecological campaigners, the court complied with the appeal, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during specific hours throughout the Diwali.

On Monday night, there was extensive violation of the time restrictions across the capital, with little enforcement regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the supposedly greener type.

Several monitoring devices throughout Delhi recorded air quality peaking around the night hours to extremely hazardous levels observed during Diwali in at least the past three years.

International Implications

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during Diwali also triggered a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province pointing to deteriorating air quality in Lahore on hazardous particles coming from neighboring India following the celebrations.

Persistent Environmental Problem

Alarmingly severe readings of pollution in the capital have persisted as a significant challenge for over a decade and a half, with the situation showing no improvement.

Around the festival period, the amount of hazardous particulate matter in the atmosphere has been documented to spike to seventy percent above the most severe levels ever documented in China's capital, which was formerly regarded as the globally most contaminated city.

Diverse Pollution Contributors

The problem in the capital is attributed to a combination of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, building projects, waste incineration and pollutants from crop residue ignition in adjacent regions of farming communities.

In these regions, rural residents routinely burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, generating toxic haze that remains stagnant over the city as colder air descends.

Medical and Economic Consequences

Both financial and medical consequences on the approximately 33 million residents living in the Delhi area is substantial, according to numerous investigations.

These hazardous conditions causes elevated rates of nervous system, heart and circulatory and breathing diseases, and can even lead to malignancies.

Air quality crisis is projected to be causing ten thousand untimely mortalities per year in Delhi.
