Political Protest in Cameroon
Numerous in Cameroon show outrage over the fact that the president has won an eighth consecutive term

The nation's Minister of the Interior the interior minister has announced that opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary will be prosecuted over accusations that he instigated "aggressive electoral rallies".

A minimum of four protesters have been killed during skirmishes between security forces and opposition supporters since the presidential election on October 12, with 92-year-old President Paul Biya winning an eighth consecutive term.

The opposition leader insists that he emerged victorious, a statement rejected by the incumbent party, the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM).

Aggressive responses by law enforcement on protesters have worried the international community, with the UN, African Union and EU urging caution.

Minister's Accusations

Recently, the interior minister charged the opposition figure of organising what he labeled "unauthorized" demonstrations resulting in the deaths, and also criticised him for claiming win in the electoral contest.

He added that Tchiroma Bakary's "associates behind an insurrectionary plan" will also undergo judicial processes.

Poll Figures

The president, who assumed office in 1982 and is now the most elderly national leader, obtained the 12 October vote with 53.7% of the vote, compared to just over a third for his opponent, according to the electoral authority.

Leader's Stance

Issa Tchiroma is remains silent to the authorities' move to try him, but he had before stated that he rejected a rigged election - and that he was undaunted of being taken into custody.

Following the vote count, he claimed that gunmen shot on demonstrators gathered near his home in Garoua, fatally wounding at least two individuals.

Investigation Announced

Recently, the interior minister revealed that an inquiry would be launched into violent incidents prior to and following the declaration of the vote outcome.

"Throughout the violence, some of the perpetrators died," he commented, without giving a exact count of protesters who have been killed in the clashes.

The minister noted that several members of the security forces also suffered major harm.

Current Situation

Even though the interior minister insisted the state of affairs throughout Cameroon was now under control, demonstrators are still demonstrating in various areas of the country, especially in Douala and Garoua, where demonstrators mounted barricades on Tuesday, and set fire to rubber on the thoroughfares.

Analysts caution that the political turmoil could push the country into a governmental instability.
