Afghan Rulers Utilized Discarded UK Equipment to Track Down Afghans Who Worked With Allied Forces, Investigation Is Told

A whistleblower has disclosed the Afghan leak inquiry that the UK left behind confidential equipment enabling the militant group to locate local individuals who worked with allied troops.

Information Leak Endangers Numerous in Danger

The source, called Person A, testified that people concerned by the data leak were told to change residences and switch their contact details to avoid detection from the ruling authorities.

MPs are looking into the Conservative government's management of a catastrophic disclosure of confidential data concerning nearly 19,000 Afghans who had applied to move to Britain to flee the regime.

The Information Breach Was Discovered

An electronic document including confidential details, comprising names, addresses and in some cases family information, was accidentally leaked by an official working at special operations center in early 2022.

The leak came to light only in August 2023, when identities of several individuals who had requested to move to Britain surfaced on social media.

Taliban Capabilities

Many believe there's a misunderstanding that militant forces do not have comparable resources that we have,” Person A informed the committee.

All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they have it. Should they obtain a contact number, they are able to track your exact position. This is exactly how intelligence groups accomplished.”

Under inquiry about whether the Taliban had access to sophisticated technology, the source declared: “They've got everything.”

Impact of the Information Leak

Early investigations submitted to the investigation estimated that at least 49 family members and colleagues of Afghans affected by the leak had been murdered.

A gag order about the breach was put in force in late 2023 and blocked any information about it from media reporting until recently.

Safety Measures

Due to legal constraints, the whistleblower and the aid group she collaborated with advised Afghan families they were working with that they had “apprehensions that certain devices had been compromised”.

“Our suggestion was that they relocate where feasible and switched their mobile numbers. These represented the primary information that, if authorities obtained these details, would result in their location being found,” Person A explained.

Challenged Assessments

The source contested that government assessment conducted by a former official had been incorrect to conclude that the possession of the information by the regime was “minimally impact present danger”.

“The important fact is that affected people are not standing up to the authorities; they remain concealed. The primary issue involves past work history.”

She detailed disturbing treatment endured by concerned people, comprising electrocution, interrogation techniques, and physical abuse.

“There are cases of toddlers who have had limbs fractured to pressure households to say where someone is,” the whistleblower revealed.
